The Rivers We Cross

A one-day exploration of the city’s possible futures. Held on October 10, 2025

[y]our 2040 hosted its first gathering outside Switzerland in Cincinnati, Ohio, bringing together around 50 participants from across sectors. The aim was to see the city with fresh eyes and explore what Cincinnati might look like in 2040 through a mix of walking, dialogue, and co-creation.

The day began with a guided walk to observe the present city and gather small “artefacts.” Back at the library, participants reflected on what they saw, engaged in conversations with local leaders and historians, and explored how past decisions shaped today’s Cincinnati.

In the afternoon, we built a “cut and paste city,” created future personas, and wrote short “future news” segments imagining life in 2040. The program closed with a circle of hopes and fears for the city and an informal gathering to continue the conversation.

This was a working session grounded in place, participation, and curiosity. For [y]our 2040, it marked a meaningful expansion of our place-based foresight work into new contexts. We are grateful to everyone who made the day possible and look forward to future collaborations.
